Biography

Gregor Amadeus Mayrhofer is internationally recognized as a conductor and composer and was appointed artistic director of the Hidalgo Festival in 2024. After studying at the Juilliard School with Alan Gilbert, he served as assistant to Sir Simon Rattle and Kirill Petrenko with the Berlin Philharmonic.
In 2026, he received the OPUS KLASSIK AWARD in the category “Innovation Award for Sustainability” for the recording of his "Recycling Concerto" with Vivi Vassileva and the SWR Symphonieorchester.

In the 2026/27 season, he will make his debut with the Thailand Philharmonic and the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra Tallinn and return to Het Collectief (Festival de Besançon) and Ensemble Kontraste Nürnberg. He will also perform his composition "Tipping Points" together with Harald Lesch, which he composed as a commission for the Berliner Philharmoniker. Highlights of previous seasons include his debuts with the Konzerthausorchester Berlin, Prague Radio Orchestra, Philharmonie Zuidnederland, Nürnberger Symphoniker and Tallinn Chamber Orchestra. His AI cantata "The Light Behind the Eyes", which was commissioned by the Netherlands Bach Society, was premiered during their tour of the Netherlands.

Mayrhofer has performed in some of Europe's most prestigious concert halls. At the Berlin Philharmonie, he conducted the Staatskapelle Berlin in his secular oratorio Wir sind Erde (We Are Earth), Britten Sinfonia at the Barbican Centre in London, the NDR Symphony Orchestra at the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, and the Ensemble Intercontemporain at the Philharmonie de Cologne and the Philharmonie de Paris.

He has conducted renowned orchestras such as the Orchestre de Bordeaux, Norwegian Radio Orchestra, MusicAeterna (Salzburg Festival), Slovenian Philharmonic and Belgrade Philharmonic. He received regular re-invitations from the SWR Symphony Orchestra, Bamberg Symphony, Munich Symphony, Munich Chamber Orchestra, Musikkollegium Winterthur and collaborated with ensembles such as Musikfabrik Köln, Ensemble Resonanz, Ensemble Kontraste, Ensemble Proton Bern and Hong Kong New Music Ensemble. He also conducted the recording of the film score for Bully Herbig's Das Kanu des Manitu and performed with renowned soloists including Patricia Kopatchinskaja, Khatia Buniatishvili, Christoph & Julian Prégardien, and Daniil Trifonov.

He received commissions from the Bavarian State Opera, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Munich Biennale, Bavarian Radio and Hanover State Opera. His works have been performed by orchestras including the Residentie Orkest The Hague, Dresden Philharmonic, and Frankfurt Radio Symphony.
Mayrhofer studied in New York, Paris, Düsseldorf and Munich and also performs as a jazz pianist.
